  • Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come. The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. • spiritual awakening - paulo coelho's' the alchemist' is superbly fabricated to help readers of all generations realize the power of going in search of your own dreams. just like the young shepherd boy, you need to listen to your heart and  let it take you to where your dreams are. it might take days, months, years or all your life to have them realized, but it's worth a journey and the reward is everywhere along the way. it's the book that makes such a huge difference in my life.

There is no other book that has helped me live my life like this book has. I mean really follow what I want to do and what I was meant to do. I think that everyone should read this book. It is endearing, moving and completely thought provoking. Unlike many books that give you a check list to living a fulfilling and happier life, this book presents you with a fable. A simple fable about a boy who is pursuing his dream. In this fable, I believe anyone can find the answers they need to following their dreams. Most of all the book gives you the courage to do so. Its one of those books that you pass on to the people that you love, because you want them to be happier too. To make their way. To pass on the message.

  • Coelho--Latin America's most widely read author after Garca Marquez--has become an international sensation: a literary bestseller with over seven million copies in print. On this passionate adventure of the heart and spirit, the two lovers together glimpse the feminine face of God and receive a startling revelation about the divine - that what theyhave always known as God is actually love, the powerful, essential force that is the very water of life. As they rediscover each other, Pilar and her lover also discover the joyous power at the heart of the human experience, and Paulo Coelho, our preeminent weaver of spiritual adventure, once again opens a window onto exhilaration and inspiration for his characters and readers alike.Return

  • From the Critics -
    • From Kirkus Reviews  - By the Brazilian author of The Alchemist (1993) and the nonfictional The Valkyries: An Encounter with Angels (1995), a more mature work of fiction that may sell big Coelho adds fiber to his usual dish of inspirational spun-sugar with this new Christian romance, set in Spain and the Pyrenees. The story follows practical law student Pilar, who at 28 has lost her faith and who suddenly finds herself pursued by a childhood friend she hasn't seen for ten years. One day in December, she receives a letter inviting her to a lecture on religion that that long-lost friend will give in Madrid. Pilar finds that he's now a believer in the miracle of the "Magic Moment," an instant in time when God gives us a chance "to change everything that makes us unhappy." He's also a fervent believer in the Virgin Mary, the   "feminine face of God." Has her friend become a seminarian, as he's suggested in a letter to her? Pilar doesn't know, but he wines and dines her and asks her to accompany him on a trip. Soon the two are sharing confidences (but not their bodies), while visiting churches and shrines, including Lourdes. This is mostly a two-character novel, with a priest used for exposition and as a means of filling in the background of Pilar's beloved (who remains nameless, being referred to simply as "he" in the narrative) as a Charismatic healer. Yes, he has the gift of laying on of hands, granted him by the Virgin when he spoke to her in tongues at a meeting of Charismatics. Even Pilar finds she can speak in tongues. Mild erotic tension grows as The Bridges of Madison County (will martyr Meryl run off with Clint?) meets The Garden of Allah (will disillusioned Dietrich wed deserter Trappist Boyer?) and Love demands that Pilar's beloved abandon healing for sexual/spiritual fulfillment.

  • Author Biography: Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the city where he now lives. His own life has in many ways been as varied and unusual as the protagonists of his internationally acclaimed novels. Like them, Paulo Coelho has followed a dream in a quest for fulfillment. His own dream, to be a writer, met with frustration  throughout much of his early adult life, a time in which he worked at various professions, some of them materially rewarding but spiritually unfulfilling. "I always knew," he says, "that my Personal Legend, to use a term from alchemy, was to write." He was 38 when he published his first book.

In 1970, after deciding that law school was not for him, he traveled through much of South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe. Returning to Brazil after two years, he began a successful career as popular songwriter. In 1974, he was imprisoned for a short time by the military dictatorship then ruling in Brazil. In  1980, he experienced one of the defining moments of his life: he walked the 500-plus mile Road of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. On this ancient highway, used for centuries by pilgrims from France to get to the cathedral said to house the remains of St. James, he achieved a self-awareness and a spiritual awakening that he later described in The Pilgrimage.

Paulo Coelho once said that following your dream is like learning a foreign language; you will make mistakes but you will get there in the end. In 1988, he published The Alchemist, a novel that explores this theme, and it launched him as an international bestselling author. Specifically, Paulo Coelho is recognized  for his powerful storytelling technique and the profound spiritual insights he blends seamlessly into his parables. Since then, The Alchemist has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and has been translated into some 41 languages. In addition to The Pilgrimage and The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho has written luminous novels about the different streams of our lives, including By The River Piedra I Sat Down & Wept, The Valkyries, The Fifth Mountain, and Veronika Decides to Die. A winner of numerous literary prizes, Paulo Coelho is also a prominent speaker for humanitarian causes. In 1999, he received a Crystal Award for Artistic Achievement at the Davos Economic Forum Conference. Return

Title:  The Valkyries: An Encounter with Angels
Author:  Paulo Coelho,Alan R. Clarke (Translator)
  • From the Publisher:The enchanting, true story of The Valkyries begins in Rio de Janeiro when Paulo Coelho gives his mysterious master, J., the only manuscript for his book The Alchemist. Haunted by a devastating curse, he  confesses to J., "I've seen my dreams fall apart just when I seemed about to achieve them." In response, J. gives Paulo a daunting task: he must find and speak with his guardian angel. "The curse can be broken," J. replies, "if you complete the task." Rising to the challenge of this spiritual gauntlet, Paulo and his wife, Chris, drop everything, pack their bags, and take off on a forty-day adventure into the starkly beautiful and sometimes dangerous Mojave Desert - where they encounter much more than they bargained for. There's the wise, twenty-two-year-old Master of the Tradition, Gene, who lives in a lone trailer on the edge of desert and begins Chris's initiation into the mystical, wondrous world of magic. There's Paulo's dark past, which he must confront and overcome in order to speak with his angel and break the curse. There's the desert itself, with its sun-drenched dust, never-ending vistas, and breathtaking sunsets. There are the Valkyries - a band of bold, leather-clad women who travel the desert on motorcycles, spreading the word of angels - led by a red-maned woman warrior named Valhalla. And there are the elusive yet ever-present guardian angels, who hold the secret keys to the gates of our happiness. Return

Author:  Paulo Coelho,Clifford E. Landers (Translator),Designed by Jessica Shatan
  • From the Publisher: A Struggle of the Spirit and a Search for the Truth - Written with the same masterful prose and clarity of vision that made The Alchemist an international  phenomenon, The Fifth Mountain is Paulo Coelho's inspiring story of the Biblical prophet Elijah. In the ninth century B.C., the Phoenician princess Jezebel orders the execution of all the prophets who refuse to worship the pagan god Baal, He has to seek safety in the land of Zarephath, where the unexpectedly finds true love with a young widow. But this newfound rapture is to be cut short, and Elijah sees all of his hopes and dreams irrevocably erased as he is swept into a whirlwind of events that threatens his very existence. In what is truly a literary milestone, Coelho gives a quietly moving account of a man touched by the hand of God who must triumph over his  frustrations in a soul-shattering trail of faith.  Return

    • From Library Journal  -

    • This fascinating retelling of the biblical story of the prophet Elijah by Brazilian novelist Coelho is smoothly   translated to read like a modern novel. The fleshed-out tale follows Elijah as he flees his homeland of Israel, where Jezebel, Phoenician wife of the king, had ordered the murder of all who reject the pagan god Baal, to Zarephath (Akbar). Elijah's spiritual crises continue after he is taken in by a widow and her son, following his direction from an angel, and ultimately falls in love with the widow. The movement of the novel comes from Elijah's introspective struggle with faith as he confronts his troubles, but the result is neither dull nor preachy and should find a niche among readers of popular fiction. -- Ann H. Title:  Veronika Decides to Die
Author:  Paulo Coelho,Margaret Jull Costa
  • From the Publisher: Twenty-three-year-old Veronika seems to have everything she could wish for. She goes to popular night spots, dates attractive men, and has a caring family. Yet something is lacking in her life. So on the morning of November 11, 1997, Veronika decides to die.

  • After she awakens from an overdose, Veronika finds she has only days to live. The story follows Veronika through those intense days as, to her own surprise, she finds herself drawn into the enclosed world of the local hospital she is staying in. In this heightened state she experiences things she has never allowed herself to feel: hatred, fear, curiosity, love, and sexual awakening. Gradually she discovers that every second of her existence is a choice between living and dying. Paulo Coelho's Veronika Decides to Die, based on his own moving personal experience, is about people who do not fit into patterns society considers to be normal. It is about madness and the need to find an alternative way of living for people who face prejudices because they think in a different way. In Veronika Decides to Die, Paulo Coelho invites the reader to discover the world that lies outside the routine and addresses the fundamental question asked by millions: what am I doing here today?" and "why do I go on living?"    Return

Thanks to Coelho's literary mastery and philosophical acuity, this engaging novel attains greatness via simplicity—a marvelous achievement! —(Lou Marinoff, Ph.D., author of Plato, Not Prozac!) —Lou Marinoff    Return

    • From the celebrated author of the best-seller The Alchemist, comes a "very interesting, thought-provoking,  and gripping" work about one woman's search for meaning in a world ruled by apathy and indifference. "Dazzlingly complex," "full of lyrical whisperings, and confessional asides," it deals with the most fundamental questions of life. "The ending took me by surprise." "So  true in so many ways." "Get this book to Oprah."

    • This book will move you...-
This book will really open your eyes to what is truly important in life, and why life is worth living. While there are a few slow spots, the ending is worth the wait. Read this, and change your perspective on life.

    • Deeply Recommended!!! - I
have read all Paulo Coelho's books, perhaps because I am Brazilian as well. But this one really had a positive effect in my life. Veronika decides to Die (I love the title!) is a book that makes you want to live your life as deepest as you can; to enjoy, to learn, and to absorb everything that life has to offer, and specially what YOUR life has to offer to you. The importance to live every single moment of our lives as it was the last one. Must read!!!

    • Great book to ponder existential crisis -
Even if you don't like Coelho's style or usual themes on spirituality, this is a book that will catch your heart and attention, specially at the end...The story of a woman like any other woman or man living in this era of 'cocooning'...I recommend it to anyone who has seen at times their life stolen by too much reality...

a thorough look at shamanism  -
A very thorough anthropological and person look into shamanism as practiced around the world. The author approached the subject as a scientist and then as a student, gaining valuable insight. Fortunately, he passed it on to the rest of us. If you are looking for a real-world look at what shamanism is and isn't, definitely read this book. You will find yourself referring back to it again and again in any further reading on the subject.

Title:  The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge
Author:  Jeremy Narby, Jeremy Nanby
  • From the Publisher: For ten years, Jeremy Narby explored the Amazonian rain forests, the libraries of Europe, and some of the world's most arcane scientific journals, following strange clues, unsuppressible intuitions, and extraordinary coincidences. He collected evidence and researched the seemingly impossible possibility that specific knowledge might somehow be transferred through DNA, the genetic information at the heart of every cell of every living thing, to a specially prepared consciousness. Narby demonstrates that indigenous and ancient peoples have known for millennia - and have even drawn - the double helix structure, something Western science discovered only in 1953. He also suggests that DNA and the life it codes for at the cellular level are "minded." Return

    • Anthropologist Narby's very personal account of his encounters with Amazonian shamanism and his passionately researched syntheses of anthropological, biochemical, neurological and mythological scholarship fascinate but do not convince. His defense of the rights of indigenous peoples against usurpation by capitalist, technological countries is admirable; his methodology is not. Throughout, Narby appears to mistake enthusiasm for evidence and he takes similarities of form (e.g., any helical pattern, hexagon or snakelike figure) to be proof of identity or of casual connection: that the serpent of shamanic lore is DNA. Of his assertion that the Amazonians' specific knowledge of pharmacology derives from hallucinogenic trance (and not from some other more diffuse source), he undertakes no experimental test, offering the typical complaints that the "presuppositions" of science are too narrow to permit the test. Narby does well to question the assumptions of scientists who dismiss all teleology in favor of mechanistic interpretations that are often deeply inadequate, and he does well to inquire into the meaning of the vast commonality of forms between science and world mythologies, but his answers too often come off as groundless invention. He provides an intriguing detective story, wondrous visions and a wealth of fascinating  information on genetic science, shamanism, etc., and he also offers some valuable thoughts on the parochial smallness of official science, but, overall, his book's greatest value, perhaps, is as a case study in the excesses of scholarship gone astray. • Cosmic Serpent is a good start –
This is a must read for anyone interested in DNA, the I CHING, psychedelics and shamanism. It's a good companion to any of Terence Mckenna's work and is an interesting and easy read, by this I mean it doesn’t contain alot of technical and esoteric jargon that may be lost on the uninitiated. I think it's a good introductory read on the subject.
